How Cats Can Transmit Infection

ROUNDWORMS
(Toxocara cati, Toxascaris leonina)
Toxocariasis
Toxocariasis does not spread from human to human. It starts when
people swallow infective eggs. This may occur when people swallow dirt or dust
soiled with cat faeces, or eat food contaminated with infective soil (raw
vegetables etc). Flies also transfer eggs onto foods, which can lead to
infections. Hands can pick up eggs by patting infected cats, which then may be
transferred onto food or other items. It is possible to become infected from
eating raw liver from infected chickens, sheep or cattle.
The faeces may also carry eggs from the cat roundworm. In rare
cases, if ingested, a larva from a roundworm egg may migrate and lodge in an eye,
causing deterioration of vision or even blindness. This is most common in children who
have been playing in sand or soil contaminated by cat faeces infected with
roundworm eggs.
