Fishing Cat
(Felis viverrina)
|
This feline was once called the Large Tiger Cat, but after
being confused with the South American Tiger Cat (Felis tigrina) it
is now known as The Fishing Cat. It lives mostly among the reed beds and
long grasses of riverbanks in southern Asia, from India to Taiwan.
These cats have partially webbed paws, and a double layer of
fur to prevent them getting their skin wet. A very powerful cat for it's size, this animal will attack
sheep, calves and dogs. It has even been known to carry off human children!
The Fishing Cat does however, live up to its name by also catching fish. It
is a nocturnal hunter that prefers dense cover, and is not thought of as a particularly good climber.
The Size of a Fishing Cat: Head + Body: 75 - 86cm
(29 ½ - 34 in). Tail: 25 - 33cm (10 -13 in).
The Weight of a Fishing Cat: 8 - 14 kg (17½ -
31 lb).
