Kimono Cat

In Japanese folklore, if a cat was born with a black mark resembling a woman wearing a kimono it was believed to bear the spirit of one of the owner's ancestors. It was common practice to send the animal to a temple for safe-keeping.

It is reported that one such cat was stolen at the beginning of the 20th century by a servant from a temple. The animal was smuggled aboard ship and ended-up in London where it lived a happy and well protected life until its death in 1911.
