 The Kattestoet Festival

Every three years on the second Sunday in May in the city of Ypres, Belgium a Feline Mardi Gras takes place. The main parade is so vast that it takes three hours to pass-by; consisting of floats depicting every phase of the feline’s history from Ancient Egypt to modern day.

The festival has rather sinister roots though! It originated in epoch where after feasting live cats were thrown to their deaths from the top of a tower. The cats were seen as devilish creatures. Amazingly, some cats did survive and were then thought to be innocent which meant that there would be a good harvest that year.
