The Cat Suit
|
The cat suit is a
tight-fitting garment of stretchy material that covers the body from the
shoulders to the thighs. It may have long sleeves or legs reaching down to the
ankles. The suits are sometimes worn for dance and exercises where you'd need a
lot of flexibility in clothing, such as ballet dancers and acrobats. They are
also used in the movies by cat-burglars, jewel thieves, and some super hero
characters.
Bodystockings
The body stocking
extending over the shoulders is really a cat
suit made from fishnet, lace, or similar material.
Bodysuit
The
bodysuit is basically a leotard that has snap closures at the
bottom It covers the torso, and might have sleeves too.
The
first cat suit was probably worn by court jesters around 1202. Many were
musicians and acrobats as well. Unfortunately, most jesters were treated badly,
and their clothes came about as a result of patching together loose bits of
cloth just to make something warm to wear.
In 1774 Christian Ernst Schreck, a very skilled knit-master, started
to produce trikot-costumes for the theatre. The first factory for stage wear was
founded in 1870 by his great-grandson, Carl Ernst Schreck. The family still
follow this tradition up to the present day.
