Mating Call
By Shay Cook
Two cats howl outside in the darkness,
I stir beneath the covers.
Fully awake, sleep interrupted,
I attend their mating call.
The peeping moon stares in the twilight.
The tom cat hisses.
Trees beat against my bedroom wall.
The female pounces.
By dawn they go their separate ways.
By spring there will be kittens.
