CAT - Used in Abbreviation

Computed Axial Tomography.

"Computed Axial Tomography"  (CAT - Scan) is the process of using computers to generate a three-dimensional image from flat two-dimensional x-ray pictures, one slice at a time. This gives a doctor the ability to distinguish, not only if a tumor is present, but roughly how deep it is in the body. The data from a CAT-scan can then be computer-enhanced to be more sensitive than a plain radiograph.

It was on November 25th 1975 that Robert S. Ledley was granted a patent for the "diagnostic X-ray system" (CAT-Scan).
