Why Cats 'like' Cat-Phobics
Have you ever wondered why when a cat enters a room where
several people are, it often makes a bee-line for the one person who has a
dislike for them? The animal then starts to rub around the persons legs and
may even jump up onto their lap.
When the cat enters the room it will notice that several
people are staring at it, which to a cat, intently staring at another animal
is an aggressive act. If those people are cat-lovers they are looking
because they like it. If they are strangers, then to a cat this means that
they are the hostile ones in the group and must be avoided. (The cat's owner
would not be included, as they are 'pseudo-mothers', and would be allowed to
stare at their 'kitten') The only person trying not to stare is the
cat-phobic who is keeping still, hoping the animal will not be attracted to
them.
This Behaviour has a completely opposite effect upon the
cat, and it will almost certainly go towards the person who is not staring
or making comments to it. The cat is going towards the person who is
displaying non-intimidating body language.
If you don't want a cat to befriend you the best thing to do
is to stare at it with your eyes wide-open, and make agitated hand movements
with your palms outward.
